The Marks of Idolatry

Exodus 20:1-6 / Acts 17:16-31

1. Idolatry fails to recognize the one true God

“What you therefore worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.” – Acts 17:23

2. Idolatry blurs the distinction between Creator and creation

“The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth…he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth…” – Acts 17:24, 26

3. Idolatry attempts to control and manipulate God

“[He] does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything…” – Acts 17:24-25

4. Idolatry designs God in our own image

“Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.” – Acts 17:29
