Passage: John 6:25-40
Service Type:

“Expiration Date,” John 6:25-40

Introduction:  The rise in popularity of Whole Foods and organic products despite the higher price.  Why?

I.        Short Term Gain:  Give Me an Apple Fritter

A.     A crowd crosses the lake searching for Jesus.  This took time and effort but…

1.      It was breakfast time and he was a free bread dispenser.

2.      Dumpster diving and the Milwaukee Rescue meal requirements.

3.      (v26) “You are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill.”

B.     A question of Law (curious about the contract’s fine print)

1.      (v28) “What must we do to do the works of God?”

2.      (v29) Jesus answers: “The work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.”

C.     Curious blindness persists

1.      (v30) “What sign will you do to convince us?”  Moses gave bread from heaven.

2.      Cheeky, asking for a sign after seeing 5000 fed with five small bread loaves.

II.       Long Term Gain: Give Me the Bread of Life

A.     (v33) “The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

1.      Another better than Moses comparison. [v32]

2.      (v34) “Sir, give us this bread always.”

3.      Similar to the Samaritan woman’s response.  Push the Easy button and no more hunger.

B.     (v35) Jesus—“I am the bread of life.”

1.      First of the seven “I am” statements.

2.      “Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

3.      How do we know if we are hungry?  How do we know if we are thirsty?

C.     (v39) God’s plan in operation: “All the Father gives me will come to me.”

1.      Jesus does not play hard-to-get: “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”

2.      (v39) “This is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all he has given.”

3.      (v40) “This is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day.”

Conclusion:   Obesity in the US.  2 of 3 adults are considered obese leading to diabetes and hypertension.

Too much food, bad food choices and too little exercise.

Obesity in our spiritual life from the same causes.
