Fear, Walk, Love, Serve

Passage: Deuteronomy 10:12-22

“Fear, Walk, Love” Deuteronomy 10:12-22

 

Introduction:  Requirements for voting, for serving in the military, for driving, for practicing medicine.

Requirements for having a child?

 

I.        (v12) “What does the LORD require of you?”

A.     “Fear the LORD your God”

1.      (v20) “You shall fear the LORD your God.  You shall serve him and hold fast to him.”

2.      (v16) “Circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.”

 

B.     Walk in all his ways.

1.      (v13) “to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD…for your good.”

2.      (v19) “Love the sojourner [NKJV—stranger] for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”

3.      James 1:27: “Look after widows and orphans in their distress and keep oneself from the pollution of the world.”

 

C.     Love him

1.      “…to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

2.      1 John 4:16-18, “God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God…Perfect love drives our fear”

 

II.       What’s So Special About God?

A.     (v14) “Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and…the earth with all that is in it.”

1.      (v15) “Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your forebears and chose their offspring.”

2.      God, our Creator, has formed us in his image, breathed his Spirit into us, and adopted us.

3.      We rightly fear him

 

B.     (v17) “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords.”

1.      Colossians 1:11-13, “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves,…”

2.      1 Corinthians 15:25-26, “The last enemy to be defeated is death.”

3.      Freed from darkness and death, we walk in his light.

 

C.     (v21) “He is your praise.  He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things.”

1.      Pastor’s story of grace from the front seat

2.      How can we not love when we realize all God has done?

 

Conclusion:   “Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now…”

“My cup overflows.  Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.”
