1 Samuel

Ch1      Hannah had no children

Ch3      Dark times: v2, “And the word of the Lord was rare in those days.”

Ch5      The Ark in Philistine territory: Dagon it

Ch7      The Ebenezer stone: v12, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Ch8      Israel demands a king.

Ch10    After a search for donkeys, Saul is anointed king. V9, “God gave him a different heart”

Ch12    Samuel’s retirement address: (v24) “Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully.”

Ch15    Bleating sheep force Samuel out of retirement.  “To obey is better than sacrifice.”

Ch16    Clandestine meet and greet with the boy David.  He plays the lyre pretty well.

Ch17    David and Goliath

Ch18    Everybody loves David except Saul who occasionally tries to kill him (ch19, 20, 23, 24)

Ch26    David spares Saul’s life for the second time

Ch28    Saul visits Endor in disguise and meets Samuel, again forced out of retirement.

Ch31    Saul dies in battle along with his son Jonathan

 

2 Samuel

Ch1-ch4  Political maneuverings, assassinations, and David writes a song of lament

Ch5      Those still alive anoint David king.  He takes Jerusalem.  Hiram sends cedars.

Ch6      The Ark brought to Jerusalem.  Uzzah dies.  David dances.  Michal objects.

Ch7      God’s covenant with David: v16, “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever.”

Ch11    Boo boo with Bathsheba

Ch15    Ab-salom’s coup and David’s retreat

Ch13    Samson:  The Nazirite vow

Ch18    Ab-salom killed by Joab; David restored to Jerusalem and throne.

Ch24    Boo boo with a head count
